iPhone 12: Apple makes jump to 5G

The company has also extended the range to include a new "Mini" model that has a smaller 5.4in screen.

The US firm bucked a wider industry downturn by increasing its handset sales over the past year.

But some experts say the new features give Apple its best opportunity for growth since 2014, when it revamped its line-up with the iPhone 6.

It will provide 4G coverage so people can make voice and video calls, browse the web, email, text and stream videos.

The project was announced two years ago but final sign-off from the Kenyan government has only just been given.

It is now being fast-tracked to help improve communications during the coronavirus pandemic.

The balloons' 4G internet service has been tested with 35,000 customers and will initially cover a region spanning 50,000 sq km (31,000 sq miles).

Germany will not bar Huawei from its 5G networks

The US has banned Huawei from selling 5G equipment to its telecoms companies, saying it contained back doors that would enable Chinese surveillance.

And the UK has promised a decision this autumn on whether the equipment-maker should be excluded from its 5G rollout.

Huawei welcomed Germany's "fact and standards based approach".

"Politicising cyber-security will only hinder technology development and social progress while doing nothing to address the security challenges all countries face," Huawei said.

5G: EE launches UK's next-generation mobile network

5G mobile networks offer faster downloads, but customers will need a new handset to take advantage.

At first, the service will only be available in limited areas of Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London and Manchester.

Rival Vodafone plans to switch on its 5G service in the coming weeks.

EE's lowest-priced deal is £54 a month plus a one-off £170 fee for a compatible handset. But this only includes 10GB of data a month, which can be used up quickly if you download lots of movies or games.
