Spain leaves PNG with good memories

Thirty-six members of team Spain will leave PNG today at 11am, but they will cherish and take back home good memories of the PNG people.

Speaking to Loop PNG on Friday night, Spain’s media officer Marina Sam Miguel said the experience has been wonderful and really amazing for a country many had to Google search.

“We didn’t know what to expect coming so far. To be honest, many of the girls had to look up on the map to see where Papua New Guinea was because they couldn’t really place it but they had a wonderful time.”

During their short stay in the country, the team visited March Girls, Sunset lodge and a few other places.

“What we all take back home with us is the people. We’ve felt so welcome by everyone’s kindness, everybody smiling, everybody waving and cheering the girls on for the match.

“We felt at home. It’s a shame we couldn’t carry on but it’s definitely going to be an unforgettable experience for all of us,” Miguel said.

When asked how they found the PNG weather, Miguel said PNG was really warm and despite being used to the heat in Spain, it is not as humid as PNG.

“It’s winter there for us, so when we left, it started getting cold, like 10 degrees so it was hot at the beginning but the girls have gotten used to it,” she further added.

Spain has a team of 21 players and 15 technical staff.

Spain bowed out of the World Cup competition on Thursday night after a heart-breaking loss to Korea DPR (3-2) in the first quarterfinals match of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. The match was played at the National Football Stadium.

They were farewelled on Friday night by the Taikone community of the Moresby South electorate. The community adopted the country when they came in and supported them during their respective matches.
