Nauru govt working to remove collapsed cantilever

The Nauru Government is working with a private company to remove a massive steel cantilever that collapsed into the sea at the island's port many years ago.

It is part of a push to tidy the island ahead of next year's 50th anniversary celebrations.

It was among three cantilevers built on the reef to carry phosphate rock to freighters anchored offshore.

They have long dominated the skyline on the island's north coast.

The removal is expected to take several months.
