2 Australians detained in Nauru

The Government of Nauru has confirmed that two Australian citizens have been detained under the immigration act while awaiting deportation.

A statement released a short while ago said the two are being provided with consular access.

“The Government reserves the right to revoke any visa by a foreign national if deemed to be in our national interest,” the statement said.

Nauru Government Information Office director, Joanna Olsson, told SBS News the group of Australians were staff working at the immigration detention centre and they were arrested on Monday.

Fairfax Media reported that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said the Australian government was providing consular assistance to a “number” of Australian citizens who had been detained.

Fairfax also reported consular officials had visited two Australians in custody on Monday.

Comment has been sought from DFAT, Broadspectrum and from Wilson Security.

Multiple companies have staff on the ground working in Nauru at the detention centre facility, including Wilson Security, Broadspectrum, International Health and Medical Services and Canstruct.
