International workshop on drug-resistant TB

Anti-tuberculosis drug resistance is a major public health problem that threatens progress made in TB care and control worldwide, say the World Health Organization.

As of 2016, there are about 29,751 TB notified cases in PNG.

Drug resistance arises from the improper use of antibiotics in chemotherapy of drug susceptible TB patients.

On this note, PNG through the National Department of Health, and in collaboration with the Medicines Sans Frontiers (MSF), is hosting an international training workshop on drug-resistant tuberculosis.

The event will be held at the Lamana Hotel, Port Moresby, from Monday 23rd – 26th April, 2018.

The workshop will focus on multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), treatment and the new drugs to treat MDR-TB.

Over 40 participants, mainly from the MDR-TB burden countries including Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Iraq, Armenia and PNG, will be participating in the workshop.

PNG will have 15 participants involved in the workshop.

There will be training on how best to deal with this dire issue of drug resistance and how best to administer the outcomes that may be derived from this workshop.
