Fiji police chief damps down coup rumours

Fiji's police chief Sitiveni Qiliho says the police are prepared for any security situation that might arise after election day.

According to a report in the Fiji Times Brigadier General Qiliho said they're working closely with the military commander Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto to monitor the situation during and after the election next week.

The paper reported his comments came after questions were put to him on alleged rumours of a coup and civil unrest.

The police commissioner said those rumours did come around but people don't need to take them seriously.

He said people should go out and cast their votes on the 14 November and enjoy the next day as there will be nothing happening.
