Fiji-born policeman killed on duty in the US

A Fiji-born police officer in the United States has been shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop in a small California town.

Ronil Singh was shot after he pulled over a truck in Newman that had no licence plate.

He died on the way to hospital.

The suspect had fled the scene in his vehicle before the police arrived.

Corporal Singh was a veteran of more than 7 years at the Newman Police Department and was assigned as a canine officer. Prior to joining the Newman Police Department, he served with the Merced County Sheriff's Department.

Corporal Singh is survived by his wife and 5-month son.
