President Baron Waqa to lead Nauru delegation

A High-level delegation from Nauru, led by President Baron Waqa, will be attending the funeral of their Chief Justice, Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi on the island of Bau this Friday.

Fiji Times reports this was confirmed by the Nauru High Commissioner to Fiji, Kim Aroi, adding they will arrive on Thursday to present their reguregu before the funeral.

"The president will be accompanied by the first lady and the delegation will also consist of judges," Ms Aroi said.

Yesterday, the Nauru High Commission also had its condolence book opened for signing. Members of the diplomatic corps took time out to sign the condolence book.

The High Commissioner confirmed that they will also be making arrangement for those who wish to attend the funeral.

Ratu Joni, who was also a former vice-president of Fiji, died last Thursday morning at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

Mr Waqa had released a statement on the same day saying that Nauru was deeply saddened by the death of Ratu Joni who had re-established honour to Nauru's court.

Ratu Joni was appointed as Nauru's top judge in September 2014.

Mr Waqa said the country and region had lost a great statesman and that Ratu Joni was instrumental in the recent reforms of Nauru's legal system, and had re-established integrity and honour to Nauru's court. His appointment followed the forced resignation of the former Chief Justice, Geoffrey Eames, who later expressed concern about the rule of law and judicial independence on Nauru.
