Nauru and European Union sign financing agreement

The European Union signed a €2.4 million financing agreement with Nauru today to support the implementation of Nauru's National Sustainable Development Strategy and the Nauru Energy Roadmap.

The EU Ambassador to Niue and the Pacific, Mr Andrew Jacobs, said: "This programme will provide a reliable, affordable, secure and sustainable energy supply as well as diversifying the generation base to meet the socio economic development needs of Nauru."

Mr Jobst von Kirchmann, Head of Unit for the Pacific, Middle East, Gulf and Central Asia in the European Commission’s Directorate General for International Cooperation and Development, added: "Through this project, the people of Nauru can expect a more efficient and secure network which can serve a greater number of households," emphasising that "the use of solar panels will require less fossil fuels and reduce air pollution.”
