Namah calls for Baki to resign

The Papua New Guinea opposition MP and Member for Vanimo Green Belden Namah is calling on Police Commissioner Gari Baki to resign.

Namah said Commissioner Baki must resign and save the police force from further harm and disgrace and save himself and his personal integrity.

Namah stated that he did not expect to hear about what the Commissioner is doing and not doing as the holder of a very important and significant constitutional office.

Baki has signed affidavits against his own policemen from the fraud office in certain pending cases, which is very unusual.

He said when addressing the media today that “Baki has suspended and terminated very senior officers from the Police Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate and recently closed down the fraud office.

“Obviously he is under tremendous pressure and would have also come under all sorts and manner of undue influence.

“These actions could very well constitute breaches of the code of conduct under the Leadership Code.

“I know that the majority of the constabulary remains loyal to the Constitution,” Namah said.

He said that the Commissioner must not compromise the credibility and integrity of thousands of men and women who serve under him.

Namah added that the Commissioner must stop all these nonsense because these actions are disgraceful and foolish.

He called on the Commissioner to resign or do the most honourable thing and that is to perform his duties without fear or favour.

Opposition Leader Sam Basil also supported the call for Baki to resign. Basil said Baki is not portraying a good image of the police commissioner’s job.

In response, Baki was disgusted that a person of integrity and a political leader like Namah can make such call.

Baki said Namah has his responsibility to the people of Vanimo Green and he’s got nothing to do with the police force.

“The police force is my constitutional responsibility and the leader should concentrate on his electorate other than talking about the police force.

“When are the leaders going to learn to leave the Government institutions alone rather than being critical simply because somebody is trying to stand up and correct things are going wrong?

“If there is something against me then I will resign but I am not going to resign because I am fixing up the system that has been messed up by politicians and he is one of them,” Baki said.
