Firm aims to increase data penetration

Data penetration in PNG is as low as 13 percent, compared to other countries on a global scale.

Digicel PNG is on the path now to increase data penetration throughout the country through the use of its recently launched service, free Facebook.

Acknowledging Facebook as the largest social media platform globally with 1.6 billion customers, Digicel PNG partnered with Facebook to provide free browsing to its PNG customers.

Digicel managing director mobile, Shivan Bhargava, said Facebook may possibly be a starting point to get more Papua New Guineans onto social media.

This move purposely comes with view that development and productivity enhancement of a country depends on data penetration.

“We’ve taken upon ourselves that social media penetration in this country grows because that’s where the growth of the economy is sitting. So Digicel, as an organisation, is pushing towards that,” the MD said when launching the service on Tuesday night.

Paul Byrne, Digicel’s head of products, said the company is working closely with Facebook on this.
