Fire guts mattress factory

The Star Mountain Mattress factory at Six-Mile in Port Moresby has been completely destroyed by fire, which started yesterday evening.

Earlier this morning, five containers in the factory containing materials used in foam mattress manufacturing were still blazing when Loop PNG arrived.

A witness who was the first on the scene, Markham Culverts gate keeper Henry Hayago, told Loop PNG the fire started at the back of the factory and spread throughout the building before the fire fighters arrived to stop it from reaching the head office.

Firefighters, with only one fire truck on the scene, ran out of water but managed to contain the blaze.

Almost all materials, including the new foam machines, were destroyed completely.

Star Mountain Factory sales manager John Koivi Omae said the cause of the fire is still under investigation whilst other witnesses at the scene were urged by police to write statements.
