Cyclone Winston death toll in Fiji increases to 42

Fiji’s National Disaster Management Office has confirmed that the death toll for Tropical Cyclone Winston is now 42

Minister for National Disaster Management Office, Inia Seruiratu said one person is still missing.

Meanwhile a 10 month old baby is reported missing in Koro Island in the Eastern Division.

The baby’s father was running for cover during the height of the cyclone on Saturday however the baby fell down and was swept away by strong currents.

The death toll is expected to increase further.

A team of emergency operations officials is expected to depart for Vanuabalavu in the Lau Group today to assist in relief efforts on the island.

Seruiratu said they established communication with the people of Vanuabalavu yesterday.

He said an assessment on the damage will be provided when the team reaches the island.

However, aerial footage taken by the New Zealand Aircraft Orion show that at least more than 20 houses were badly damaged in Vanuabalavu.

This number is expected to increase when the team carries out a ground assessment.
