The Cook Islands is expected to have a greater voice in the Commonwealth sports arena soon.
Cook Islands Sports and National Olympic Committee (CISNOC) president Hugh Graham has been elected as the Commonwealth Games Federation’s Oceania regional vice-president.
His election as one of six regional vice-presidents was made at this week’s Commonwealth Games Federation general assembly in Auckland, New Zealand.
Graham is one of the six regional vice-presidents responsible for the associations in the six regions of the Commonwealth Games Federation: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Caribbean, Europe and Oceania.
CISNOC secretary general Robert Graham, who is also part of the assembly in Auckland, says ultimately Hugh will be the voice for the Cook Islands and Oceania region within the Commonwealth Games Federation.
He says this will translate into positive benefits for the sports family of the Cook Islands.
As well as being CISNOC president, Hugh is also president of the Cook Islands Volleyball Federation and secretary of the Oceania Volleyball Federation.
The Commonwealth Games Federation is the international organisation responsible for the direction and control of the Commonwealth Games.
Robert says it’s a proud moment for Cook Islands sports and adds that regional sports pioneers including some from the Cook Islands are to be honoured as part of this week’s general assembly in Auckland.
