2 Nauru Olympians in Rio

The Republic of Nauru has two athletes representing the nation at the Rio Olympic Games.

It will be the sixth straight Olympiad in which Nauru will field a team at the summer games since the nation was admitted to the International Olympic Committee in 1994.

Predominantly qualifying athletes in the weightlifting discipline, Nauru will field only its second ever competitor in Judo with Ovini Uera taking part in the 90 kilogram category.

The 28 year-old took bronze in the recent Oceania championships.

22 year-old Elson Brechtefeld is Nauru’s other competitor and will represent his country in the 56 kilogram weightlifting. Elson excelled at the recent Australian National Championships where he won silver.

The team of athletes and officials have been in Rio for a week acclimatising and are being led by the Republic’s first ever Olympian, Marcus Stephen, Nauru’s Olympic Committee President.
